History

1916
On the initiative of Prince von Pless, Hans Heinrich XV von Hochberg, the construction of a power plant and electrothermal smelter began in Łaziska Górne. It was designed to meet the demand for calcium carbide used in local mines. At the beginning, calcium carbide was supplied mostly to mines owned by Prince von Pless.
1917
Production of calcium carbide was launched.
1918
The power plant and calcium carbide factory were registered in the industry register as a company under the name “Kraft und Schmelzwerke Aktiengezellschaft” (Power plant and calcium carbide factory of the “Princeling” mine).
1919
All shares in Kraft und Schmelzwerke “Prinzegrube” Aktiengezellschaft were purchased by a Swiss company called “Elektrochemie AG – Schaffhausen”, in which Prince von Pless had a casting vote. Supplies of calcium carbide to the mines located in Upper Silesian Coal Basin were launched.
1920
Beginning of ferroalloys production to meet the needs of Upper Silesian steelworks. The production profile of the smelter is ferrosilicon, ferrochrome, ferroaluminosilicon, quick-setting cement, and corundum.
1924
The previous name, “Kraft und Schmelzwerke Aktiengezellschaft”, was changed into “Zakłady Elektro Spółka z ograniczoną poręką”.
1926
The economic recovery and the Swiss capital inflow resulted in extension of the production range and increase in the volume of production. They also brought new solutions to the manufacturing process.
1929
The “Elektro” plant in Łaziska Górne received a gold medal at the Polish General Exhibition in Poznań for ferroalloys production and export activities.
1946
After the World War II, the “Elektro” plant was nationalised.
1949

The “Elektro” plant was divided into the “Łaziska” power plant [Elektrownia “Łaziska”] and the “Łaziska” Smelter [Huta “Łaziska”]. Facilities producing ferroalloys were separated from the multi-branch “Elektro” plant, and a stand-alone company “Huta Łaziska”, focused strictly on the production of ferroalloys, was created.

1953
Production of ferroalloys in submerged electric-arc furnaces on the second furnace building was launched.
1963

The modern third furnace building was put into operation.

1971
The fourth furnace building, equipped with installation for de-dusting of flue and post-reaction gases, was put into operation.
1975
The first furnace building was modernised.
1987
The installation for de-dusting of flue gases from the first furnace building was put into operation.
1990
The closed technological water circuit and water treatment station were put into operation.
1994
The remaining furnace workshops were connected to the installation for de-dusting of flue and post-reaction gases.
1997
The state-owned enterprise was transformed into a publicly listed company.
2005
The modern, two-stage line for crushing, screening and packaging of ferroalloys was put into operation.
2008
The closed cooling water circuit with heat recovery used for heating the plant and hot water production was put into operation.

Huta Łaziska continuously improves the production process in terms of technology, raw materials and energy utilisation efficiency, also by minimising the production influence on the environment.
